(view spoiler)[Does anyone else suspect Florentino Ariza was meant to be an even darker character than Marquez explicitly reveals. Eg. Was he involved in the deaths of his uncle's four sons. Did he plant/leak the stories in "Justice"? Did he in fact write the winning poem submitted by the Chinese? How did he really get that photo? Could he have planted the counterfeit money behind the mirror to frame Lorenzo Dasa? (hide spoiler)]

This answer contains spoilers… (view spoiler)[Do not recall anything in the book leading to the assumptions you are making above. He participated in the poetry competition to be able to get a chance to meet Fermina which was only possible if he won. Regarding the photo (of Fermina and Hildebranda dressed up in their youth), he mentions that he obtained it in the gallery of the scribes, a place he was known to venture to often and we have no reason to doubt that. With regards to Lorenzo Daza, right from the start we are told that he appears to have shady dealings, one of the reasons why he escaped from his hometown. (hide spoiler)]
