Goodreads asked John Castle:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

John Castle Understand the importance of story; begin by first understanding that your character is NOT your story. Your character is the prime mover, but things have to happen to her, and she has to take proactive measures with regard to those things. The biggest mistake I see aspiring authors make is to write extended character sketches instead of stories. The second biggest is failure to torture their heroes.
