I haven’t started watching the Netflix show yet (but I plan to). I got the book as a gift. Do I need to watch the show first? It seems like the book might be a prequel to the show. Will the book have little references to the show that I wouldn’t pick up on if I don’t watch the show first?

Yes. Definitely watch the show first. It’s based before the show but you need to watch it to understand it.
