Can the first book standalone or is this a pretty tight series?

Sarah I just finished the book and it can be read as a standalone.
Jack It has a satisfying endpoint as is fine as a standalone. There will be open questions that will be answered in later books, but (if you are only able to read one book, and you're anything like me) it's more of a question of whether you can stop such an incredible series at just one book, or whether you would spend your life in regret in not having been able (for whatever reason) to read the further adventures of Murderbot.

But YMMV. If you don't like it, read it and move on. Though it's just a novella; altogether the whole series is equivalent to a novel.
Savannah that's up to you
George I also read the first few chapters of the sequel, which were printed at the back of this one. Yes, this one can be read alone. But yes, it's clearly going to be much more interesting as the series proceeds!
