In my opinion, she was kidnapped. It doesn't make sense that there would be an exhaustive search which found nothing and an eleven-year-old that could make up such a convincing story and trick the professionals. I think she had a selective memory, riddled by guilt because of her anger against DJuna at the time. The mind does funny things (remember the last episode of Mash when Hawkeye thought a chicken had been strangled on the bus?).
