Inspiration to pursue individual stories is no longer necessary, given that I write a series, and am constantly out ahead in the planning sense. But to sit down and write... I have learned that that inspiration will never come on its own. There are always things that have to be done, and more things you would like to do, no matter what your interests, and human nature is to say, "Well, as soon as I do this, it's writing time." I write times and dates on the calendar, sort of appointments with my keyboard, and keep them as I would an appointment with my doctor. At first I was convinced that that wouldn't work, as my muse might not be switched on at that particular time, but what I've found in practice is that when I see that date looming on the calendar, my subconscious comes together with my daydreams to evaluate scenes and make choices, and when the time is upon me, so is the muse.
