Goodreads asked Kathryn Heaney:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Kathryn Heaney If you never write, you'll never know what you can do. Explore. Try different approaches to writing with small stories. One of my favourite challenges is to enter the annual short story contest that Polar Expressions offers to Canadian writers. It's very challenging to keep within their 750 word limit. Every summer I try to write something very different. I've done a paranormal-romance, a story from the perspective of a 15 year-old boy, one from a 50+ single woman, and my last story was from the perspective of aliens who have watched out planet's movies and speak only in movie quotes. If your story is chosen, they will include it in a book of Canadian Short Stories. So far, they have published all my stories.
