Nancy Sander I thought it was weird too, but decided it was the time. Not a lot of communication, and people didn't have time to investigate. And also later in the story it said that the man she attacked did not want to press charges. They were not suppose to be gambling in the first place so he didn't want to lose his job.
Emily Weisenburger Because she confessed to killing a man at the lumber camp.
Esme Did anyone else find it odd that they just took her in and put her in custody, and didn't go check out her claim immediately? Much later in the book when she comes to trial the authorities seem to be able to put their hands on the guy in question (not dead) pretty quickly. I found that aspect of the book to be very hard to believe.
