Barber seems to have a thing about people who drive first releasing the hand brake. This seems very odd, do all cars in England have hand brakes?? I drive an automatic and have a foot brake which I only use if I am on a very steep hill. Anyway seems an unnecessary comment to make every time someone drives a car.

Yes in the UK all our cars have handbrakes to the best of my knowledge. I drive both manual and automatic, I generally don't use the handbrake with the automatic, unless I'm parking up, but with manual gears I would use it at all stopping points.
Joo
As a British car drive I can confirm that I do release my handbrake nearly every time I set off from standing. And my car is automatic.
There are very few cars (that I know of) in Britain without handbrakes.
As to why the author mentions it every time, I've no idea :)
