Goodreads asked Hilary Shew:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Hilary Shew In July 2013, my friend, Toni Raczynski, asked me to write a book about her husband, John, and his family's experience as Polish deportees during World War II. I considered the great responsibility I had before me and accepted the challenge, not knowing how the project would change my life. Almost one year later, upon completion of this book, I had traveled figuratively halfway around the world and learned about Poland, the Soviet Union, Central Asia, the Middle East, and Mexico. I also learned about the triumph of the human spirit against insurmountable odds and the Polish people's hope for a better future. I also learned about my own distant Polish roots.
