The book is only partly autobiographical as the author and the book's protagonist share some similarities in their upbringing, education, and adult life. However, Alexander Chudakov himself never regarded his book as authobiography, and his wife in an interview stressed that some parts of the novel, for instance, the first chapter, were totally fictional.
