R.A. Denny I spent years trying to figure this out and finally about a year ago discovered a reference online to a William Wirt, who was the U.S. Attorney General. Wirt was born in Maryland, orphaned at age 8, a hard worker of humble background who eventually prosecuted Aaron Burr. Many of the facts do not fit, but it is possible that he was the inspiration for the book. What do you think?
