Goodreads asked Rachael Higgins:

How do you get inspired to write?

Rachael Higgins If I am writing a story, my words are inspired by what I have experienced and how I can interpret that experience into a message or moral lesson to pass on to others. The words I write in poetry, are generally inspired by my surrounding scenery and the thoughts or emotions that are triggered by my surroundings.

As an author, I would like to say that I carry a notebook and pen with me wherever I go just in case; but I am often without a pen. There was one time, I was at the beach and inspiration flowed. The need to write down my idea was so compelling that I ended up composing the poem on my phone's sticky note app. Other times I am more prepared, I specifically set aside a quiet time to write; with a notepad and pen at the ready. A time where I can sit down, take in the scenery, and wait to see where the inspiration takes me whether it be a story or poem that emerges.
