I consider Death's Good Intentions to be Book 1 of the series because everything that comes after it needs to be read in order. Chronologically, The Man with the Devil's Tongue takes place before Death's Good Intentions, working something like an extended prologue to the series. You don't need to read the prequel in order to follow Death's Good Intentions. If you want some back-story, start with The Man with the Devil's Tongue. If you want to get straight to the action, start with Death's Good Intentions. I leave the choice up to you.
