Because it is an adult author using the same "formula" to write a YA novel. YA novels aren't adult novels set in high school. Coben fans will like it but teens are going to hate it because the characters and the voice just are not authentic enough to pass a teen's BS meter.

I find this book and its series very exciting, and the characters very authentic. I love all the twists and turns, like ema's real identity, and I find it a great book. I have no idea why you find it bad, stephan

In my opinion, I think the author tried to mashed it up and try to make it thriller-ish by doing silly things like "I don't have a daughter whose name is Ashley" and the names, are you kidding me Spoon? Candy? Mickey???? I really didn't like it at all in my opinion.
