In one of the interviews that Lee Child gave he said that it was because he was out of a job and he saw that people in the supermarket had a job of "reaching" up to bring down products for customers when it was too high for them. So he joked to his wife that if nothing else, he could always work as "a reacher".. hence the name. :-)
