Can someone explain to me how Lotte Berg got possession of the desk in the first place? The book drove me crazy, but I think I figured out everything else that confused me.

Nicki We were never meant to know who gave it to her. Lotte Berg's husband Arthur received the name and address of Lotte's former lover (benefactor of the desk) from Mr. Weisz...but Arthur decided not to pursue the question of who he was out of respect for the relationship that he had shared with Lotte.

Layla It wasn't clear but I think Mr weisz was her love who gave the desk to Lotte.
