I saw an interview with her on Jon Stewart and she researched this book for two plus years so definitely real. It was very good.

Be aware that authors take creative license to tell books. Often these Islam accountings of particular women's stories are offered as though ALL women in that country or region are oppressed and need saving. Millions of women in Islam are getting educated, pursuing careers, having families (with one husband), and not oppressed at all. Read Do Muslim Women Need Saving? https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1... for a scholarly accounting of women in the MENA that are actually realizing self-determination and oftentimes more educated and better off than millions of American women.
