Goodreads asked S.A. Youngman:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

S.A. Youngman Like my lead character Shelly, I worked in a convenience store in my late teens and spent many hours perusing the gossip magazines, particularly those dedicated to music (Star Hits, Creem, Rolling Stone). There was a craze back then called "fan fiction" where someone would write a story based on the real-life singer or band - it was pure fantasy which didn't interest me. I wanted my world to be based in reality and put them in scenarios that could have happened - a parallel universe, if you will. That's why I decided to create my own fictional band (Fantage) based on a homogenization of many bands I followed in the 1980s. Of particular inspiration to me were Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, and the many one-hit-wonder bands that only a handful of people remember.
