Zedsdead +1 for Fables. It's less philosophical and meandering, more story-driven than Sandman. But it's terrific writing and digs deep into various folklore traditions for its characters. It's excellent.

Mike I'd recommend Unwritten by Mike Carey (similar literary/dark tone) or Fables by Bill Willingham (fairytale with twist)
