Nick Green asked C.J. Redwine:

Why do you think young adult readers are so drawn to the ideas of apocalypse and dystopia?

C.J. Redwine I think post-apocalyptic/dystopian literature gives teens a safe lens to use in deconstructing their own reality. They can explore difficult themes and experiences without it feeling like it's in their own backyard. It's always a little bit easier to work through loss or survival or the struggle to understand your own beliefs and how that may differ from the beliefs of those around you or how you might disagree with the authority figures in your life when you can do it through the eyes of a character whose world is very different from your own even while her emotions are very similar.
