Goodreads asked Mark Jone:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Mark Jone My most recently published novel is 'Dark Soul: Legend of the Daemon-Whore.' This was my attempt to do something different with the heroic fantasy genre, combining the swashbuckling escapism of dungeons and dragons with something much darker such as Gothic horror. I deliberately avoided the genre conventions of an epic quest and a landscape populated with elves and fairies. This is Tolkien meets Poe. It's very dark indeed. I love fantasy novels but found a great many of them very similar in style. I always wanted to contribute something to the genre but decided if I wrote one it would have to be as far removed from the usual trappings of such literature in an attempt to create something original. I'm a big fan of Terry Pratchett and completely adore the seemingly endless diversity of his imagination within this particular genre.
