Goodreads asked Andrea McKenzie Raine:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Andrea McKenzie Raine The inspiration for my first novel, Turnstiles, was sparked by a 2-month solo backpacking trip I embarked on through Western Europe in 1998. I came across a youth who was in a tunnel in a sleeping bag, but I wasn't certain if he was homeless or just another backpacker trekking around on a shoe-string budget. He stayed with me, so I came home and began writing about him. He turned out to be a springboard for other characters and situations unfolding organically in the story.
