Goodreads asked Querus Abuttu:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Querus Abuttu Go to school. Get the MFA in the style of writing you'd like to study. Practice, and have several people critique your work AND LISTEN TO THEM. Read lots of "how to" books on creative writing and storytelling. Don't be so attached to your work that you get butt-hurt when people don't love it and praise it. Your family and friends will usually praise you. They are not objective. You need good crit partners and mentors to help make your writing better. Don't decide to self publish unless you've demonstrated your chops by being accepted by a magazine, anthology or major publisher. Would be authors are too quick to put their work on Amazon, or self publish because no one will take their work, and they should realize there's a REASON no one will take their work. It needs improvement, and the writer isn't ready yet.
