Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?
The Corsican Dove started out as a spoof of The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammet. It was written to bring some humor into the work place. Everyone got a great laugh out of it, so I kept going. Pretty soon the characters were talking to each other (without my help – very strange feeling). The plot was added in around the characters, and arose out of my thirty years as an orthopedic surgeon.

I have just finished the next book in the Ramone Ramone cases, The Beijing Duck, which will be out in September, 2014.
I am currently writing The Gallic Chicken, the third case of Ramone Ramone. I have not yet painted its cover, but I will by Dec.

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?
First, second and third, I would recommend Stephen’s book on writing. It reads like a novel. His best advice is to not write out a plot. Develop the characters and let them do what is in their nature. He also says he hates adverbs. I noticed adverbs got in the way being true to the old writer’s saying – show don’t tell.
The final piece of advice is don’t try to find an agent. It’s like beating your head against the wall, plus I believe it is harder to write what you want to write.

I think the best thing about being a writer is writing. Sometimes three hours go by and you have no idea where that time went. It is an unconscious activity, and whereas, I don’t meditate, I would guess the feeling must be similar.
