Kristine "should be?" No, MUST BE. Stephen King explains this better than I could in his book _On writing,_ but I find it to be true over and over again: I learn to write by reading. I don't read anything that I think is really bad, but I learn from reading things I think are not very good by making myself put my finger on what isn't very good about it. I'm currently reading a novel by one of my very favorite authors and really NOT loving it, despite the fact that there's much she does really well as always. After a lot of thought I realized the problem - for me at least - is there's not enough plot. I'm all for character-driven stories, I don't need fast-paced action-packed ... whatever, but there's almost no forward motion in this one. The characters are really complicated people but mostly all they do is get older. I expected so much more from her -

Wow, I could go on for another hour. Probably should fix dinner instead ...
