Goodreads asked Ireland Gill:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Ireland Gill I knew this question would pop up sooner or later after publication, and honestly, I can't exactly remember where the idea for NZ came from. My husband would tell you that he came up with Evika's name, and I will give him that. He was helpful when this idea first sparked. NZ was in development for such a long time and had become so many things as it morphed from a graphic comic idea to a full-fledged book series. In the comic idea, Hayden was an angel that turned into a talking alley rat with an eye patch. Evika's character would walk around with him in her backpack and fight off demons among the seedy city streets in the middle of the night. There was much more to it than that, but I am very glad it has blossomed into what it is now.
