Goodreads asked Leslie McKelvey:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Leslie McKelvey Have a very firm grasp of writing mechanics. If you don't, learn them. Publishers will round file (which means throw in the trash can) manuscripts that are full of grammar and spelling mistakes, punctuation errors, and the like. After that, I'd say write using your head and your heart. One is for the mechanics side, and the other is for the story itself. You're going to need both!
