Jonas leaving would be a way that he could release the memories without Jonas dying. It's possible that Jonas could make a life out there. If not, it's no worse than "release". Either way, the Giver had no intention of staying around much longer. He longed to be with his daughter. He would help the community cope with the memories and then possibly ask to be released after he was confident in their ability to take on the remaining memories.
