There isn't anyone I based Gamble on. I needed a man who was experienced in war, affected by it, but not too old by HEART OF OAK's telling. He would command a company and be a good officer to them, but would also be at times harsh, but never cruel. He thinks the world of his marines and is extremely loyal to them.
I chose Guernsey because I love the island and could imagine such a man born there with sea salt in his veins, but not a Jack Tar.
