There's quite a bit of gore in the series but honestly no more than a teen would see if they were allowed to watch slasher horror movies etc. The titans can look real freaky and have a tendency to eat humans but if my kid was a teen I'd let her read whatever she wanted!

Check out the first episode of the anime, it matches the story and tone of the manga pretty consistently. You should be able to watch for free on Crunchyroll.com or possibly Netflix.
