Here are the top three things that you should know before going into this:
1) Don't put it down! I made that mistake so many times, and I regret it completely. Just trek through it and soon it'll pass your "favorites" test with flying colors.
2) Get into mythology. You probably should learn the basics of mythology. I read it after reading "The Red Pyramid", so I was already getting into different kinds of mythology. Just read up a bit on the different gods and such, and then start reading the book.
3) Don't do too much research! Go into this knowing next to nothing. Rick Riordan is an AMAZING author, and he hasn't disappointed my yet. Just read it with no expectations and maybe a hope or two. Coming out of it, you'll be glad you read it.
