"Four: A Divergent Collection" is not the "first book" in the series, it IS the series; just the collection of Novellas from Four's point of view, which were released separately, all put into one book. In chronological order, "The Transfer" is first, followed by "The Initiate," and then, "The Son." They all are pre-quels to Divergent- basically Four as a Dauntless initiate, two years prior. The final story, "The Traitor" retells some of Divergent from Four's POV, and you get to experience some beloved scenes from a different angle, and a bit differently than how Tris interpreted the same situations. As Veronica Roth explained, it shows "how limited Tris's perspective really is, though she is a reliable and observant narrator."
