The book mentions she maxed out her credit card buying everything for the baby. To think that she would go there to get the crib, monitor, bottles, clothes, etc. did not seem at all unlikely to me for an upper middle class woman in the suburbs during this time period. Also, this book was written during a time period that didn't have as much snobbery about chain stores and shopping "small and local" as there is now. (less)
