I think the book aims to show the extreme consequences of removing people's ability to make choices to facilitate an egalitarian social order. These people are dehumanized to the point where they don't realize what they've lost, and that's the greatest tragedy. Lowry leaves it to a preteen boy to show us, the readers, what an impulsive, emotional response to that society looks like.
