Hi Claire,
I'm, of course, biased to your first question, so I can't answer it. However, as for your second question, I can say this: There is no sex in the book, and barely any swearing. I think a "damn" might be in there somewhere. It is a darker book, though, and there is fantasy violence. I wouldn't recommend it for anyone under age 16.
