I force myself to put thoughts and plot elements into an outline and then sort into the existing timeline and play around with them, not needing to word-craft anything, but just playing games with 'What-If' scenarios--giving reign to my imagination without restriction. Sometimes pieces fit into my current project, sometimes into others.
