I just acquired this book, but I never read the first one. Because this s a prequel is it safe to read? I know it's a prequel, but I'm still afraid to read it because on Goodreads it says #2.

Oh yeah, there's no spoilers or anything. It's set purely in the past.

20 years ago I started the same way. I agree with the answers below, no spoilers, just a few references connected to Redwall that a reader will miss, but not overly miss out on.
In general, I always advice to read a series by publication order, not "chronological". The reason this was written was to fill in a story for references made in Redwall, and in the rest of the series Jacques jumps around filling in the universe in a similar way, continuing new tapestries onto the loose ends of the old. Most of his stories are fairly innocuous, but his canon-building skills are full of lessons authors should learn from!

You can read this before the first book. It is actually best to read this first.
Hope this helped! :D

It's safe to read. The books were actually made in the wrong order: it goes back into the past.
