Harriett Milnes O. Henry wrote a short story called "The Gift of the Magi". In in a young couple has no money with which to buy each other a Christmas gift. The husband hocks his watch to buy his wife beautiful hair combs; meanwhile the wife has sold her hair to buy him a watch chain.
