Goodreads asked Karen Ranney:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Karen Ranney My books always start with the characters and an amorphous idea for the plot. Once the characters are fixed in my mind I know where they're going and what they're doing.

I'm currently writing the second book in the MacIain Trilogy, and I knew who the hero was going to be right away. The heroine then demanded equal time. Minerva is a cross between a spinster and Auntie Mame. She knew from an early age that society was not going to approve of her because of her interests. So, she pretends to ignore everything about it and every one. The truth is that she's like the rest of us, wanting to fit in just a little.
