Does the reader feel more empathy or aggravation toward Insurgency's protagonist Alan, and why?

Ashley Empathy, in the beginning. Down on his luck, crappy job, OCD. But then something about his manner just doesn't sit right and you can't blame the jerks for spiking his drink with RP. Plus, you get the sense that he does things due to the fact that he is a coward rather than out of a sense of right/wrong or wanting to be a good guy.
