Goodreads asked Trevor Gates:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Trevor Gates No matter what, write the story you want to tell. Take that constructive criticism and make your story the absolute best that you can, but never sacrifice creativity, originality, character, or plot for the sake that maybe not everyone will like it. You can't rely on what everyone else is going to think. That rationale will hinder your genuine self. We have to accept the fact that not everything we write will be liked by everyone, but there will always be those few (or many) that appreciate a no-holds-barred, unapologetic, risk-taking author. Your authenticity will be the back-bone that shapes you and your readers. See, I didn't do that the first time around, and it killed me just a little bit knowing that the real story could be out there and whatever other people were reading was a pale imitation--a false clone of the pure work still lingering inside me.
