Goodreads asked Joseph Hester:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Joseph Hester I got the idea of writing Buddy Hemp from outlaw ballads that I wrote in the early seventies and the eighties. I created the name Buddy Hemp from looking at a Marijuana bud while drinking several cold beers. Somehow, I managed to connect Bud with Hemp, and as usual, I wrote it down. If I had not written it down, I would have forgotten it. I decided to write a book about something I knew about. The ballads outlined the course of some events. It was the most fun to write. By the way, I've been clean and sober for Eighteen years now and I thank the Lord for love and hope.
