I didn't make this anonymous -- does anyone care? I think it's fun to see who is voting for what, and I hope it encourages people to speak to their desire to read Book A over Book B, or some such thing.

But let me know if it makes you uncomfortable that we can see what book you voted for.

It was a tough decision between Walkabout and Life and Fate. I'm in the mood for epic tomes at the moment, so went for Life and Fate.

Jonathan I had the same debate, but as I have another long book I'm supposed to be reading for another group, I thought Walkabout might be more manageable. Also, I liked the comparison to Rock Crystal, which we read here awhile ago. Not everyone's cup of tea, but I liked it a lot.

Hi Seana. Yes, I was intrigued by the comparison with Rock Crystal on the blurb. I read Rock Crystal last year and was blown away by it and Adalbert Stifter has become one of my new favourite authors - I've also read The Bachelors & Brigitta, with Abdias, Limestone & the Forest Path which were great also. Hopefully NYRB might publish some more by him. :-)

Okay, everyone, voting ends tomorrow (I'm not sure what time exactly). Right now [I]Walkabout[/I] has a commanding lead.

If you have suggestions for how to publicize this a bit better, I'm all ears. I think these polls don't show up and people stop paying attention if they don't get the notification. Invite your friends :-) .

Had I not looked up Walkabout, I would have chosen Life and Fate but it seems like such a beautiful book, especially when compared to Rock Crystal, which I also intend to read this year.

Great to see lots of votes coming in :-). Looks like just a few more could make a difference, but I want to note I got Walkabout today...

I keep imagining John Locke hunting wild boar whenever I see or hear the word "Walkabout." Am I the only one?
