Unfortunately, Shards of Honor has really poor availability, so I went with Cetaganda because it is available and has pretty good closure. What's your sense, Julia, about its stand-aloneness? It's been a while since I read it, but I figured it would be okay, since you've read it a couple of times you've probably got a better idea, though.
Brad, 'shards' by itself is indeed hard to find...but the omnibus that contains book 1 and 2 in the vorkosigan series, Cordelia's Honor, is very easy to find. bonus: you can buy an e-copy direct from the publisher for 5 bucks in any format you like:http://www.webscription.net/p-85-cord...
Also, Brad, for many they first read The Warrior's Apprentice aka Young Miles first and then go back to read his parents' story...Cetaganda isn't much of a stand-alone, IMO. The Mountains of Mourning a novella with a young Miles in rural backward Barrayar (his home planet) stands alone, brilliantly. Mountains of Mourning can also be found in the Young Miles omnibus. It's also to be found in Borders of Infinity and the omnibus Vorkosigan's Game.
I'm so far behind on my many books clubs that I'm thrilled I can vote for a five-star book I just finished. The City & The City rules!
Why do with have Cetaganda by Lois McMaster Bujold in the list? Not that it's bad or anything. But it is #9 in a series. That's just wrong.
Mountains of Mourning can also be found for free in Baen's online library: http://www.webscription.net/10.1125/Baen/1011250002/1011250002.htmIMO Cetaganda does work as a bit of a stand alone but probably Warrior's Apprentice would be better, or reading both Shards of Honor and Barrayar together. :D
don't know if anybody is still reading this thread, but Bujold just posted on her blog that
Warrior's Apprentice
is now available in the Baen Free Online Library. She's also posted links to some other online freebies.
