This is the plot of the book I’m writing:

At an elite, sentient academy, failure doesn’t cost you grades—it costs you pieces of your mind. The souls of the students are all tied to the school system itself. Each subject governs a human function. Fail mathematics, and you lose the ability to reason. Fail language, and you will never again articulate what is in your mind. By graduation, the weakest students are barely themselves. Once a year, the academy offers redemption for their most elite students: a brutal series of trials where students can reclaim what they’ve lost. But the academy isn’t trying to educate them. It’s trying to remake them. And not everyone is meant to come back whole. In order to escape the system and win back freedom for her cousin, Dodona, Tavia must team up with the only person who has ever been able to best her: her academic rival, Maverick. Together, they must work to unravel the system that has them trapped… and not to be anything more than begrudging allies.
