Do you consider yourself a book addict?

Yes, why else would I spend all my time on a website entirely devoted to sweet, sweet literature.

Somewhere in the middle, I love to read but I'm not obsessed with it, it's not my entire life but fills a good portion of it.

  372 votes, 29.0%

No, reading is merely an activity to fill my time while I'm waiting in the Doctor's office, or because the power has gone out.

Amanda Does anyone else notice how good smelling books are when you fan yourself with its pages?

message 2: by Antoine (new)

Antoine Hahaha. I commented fondly once on the smell of the stacks in Boston Athenaeaum, and a staff member sighed and laughed and said that she felt the same way, but that it was sad because its the smell of non-archival paper "off-gassing" as it decays. So it is the smell of books dying slowly.

message 3: by Megan (new)

Megan I like to think of it as the smell of books living (since that's just another way of saying dying slowly). It's funny, a handful of my favorite books, the ones I read over and over, I could probably identify by smell.

message 4: by Antoine (new)

Antoine That is a much better way to think about it. Thank you.

message 5: by Elara (new)

Elara But some book smell terrible! Seriously! This one book I read smelle like crap! I let it sit out in front of our little Glade thing for a week before I could read it! I nearly sued the book store!

message 6: by Antoine (new)

Antoine Books can be odor sponges. I used to work in a second-hand bookstore, and books that had been in the same house as a heavy smoker were nearly always rejected by the owners, unless they were incredibly rare. Mildew can also be a problem. Cat pee is another smell that is just lethal around books.

But new books, I don't always love the smell of either. Not sure if it is the glue they use or what.

message 7: by Tess (new)

Tess Ohhh I love to fan the pages of a book and smell that sweet smell! I even prefer the way old books smell, rather than new ones. I do have a love affair with old (not necessarily classic or anything) books. It's like they've captured the essence of everyone who's held them in their hands, so their smell tell me a story, apart from the story printed on their pages.

About their being sponges, though, that's right. They can pick up nasty smells as well as nice ones. I once found an old paperback copy of Stephen King's Skeleton Crew in a German pub (yeah, a bookshelf in a pub, go figure) and it still reeks of cigarette smoke. Well, not quite so much as when I got it, it has faded a little, but it does have that nice, musty, "crackling" (don't know how to describe it) aroma paperback pages get over time, as they yellow...

message 8: by Cyd (new)

Cyd I had a book from the library once and it smelled like the previous readers perfume and it was awful.

message 9: by Leana (new)

Leana There wasn't an option for when I am not at work, I read as much as I can. But I do love it!!!

message 10: by Mick (new)

Mick I have to have a "reserve" pile. So I don't run out. (I get the shakes if the pile gets down to four or less!)

message 11: by Laura (last edited Jan 06, 2010 06:56PM) (new)

Laura I bought a cookbook and it smelled terrible. So I gave it to my Aunt.
I think textbooks smell like sweat.

message 12: by Leana (new)

Leana LOL Laura! I totally love the smell of them. I think they smell like paper and new plastic!

message 13: by Laura (last edited Jan 07, 2010 03:04PM) (new)

Laura I like thick, recycled-paper paperbacks. They smell like real books.

message 14: by Leana (new)

Leana Ooh for sure! I love going to this used book store downtown here in Salt Lake. Just walking into the store is like heaven. I am sad to lose that with my Nook but I am so much more excited to not worry about my books being everywhere that I don't have room for them to be!

message 15: by Nightshade (new)

Nightshade I have a Reader now- and don't get me wrong, it's totally awesome- but there's nothing like the smell of a nice, new book. Especially one that you've been wanting to get FOREVER.

Like, when I got The Last Olympian (the day it came out! :D), I'd been waiting a YEAR for it, so the first thing I did was flip it open and smell it. Umm... I just realized that sounds really weird, but it smelled really good. XD

message 16: by Leana (new)

Leana Totally get it Nightshade! It's like a fake Christmas tree vs the real thing. The smell! I love the smell. But I don't think I will ever have a real one ever again. Thank goodness for pine scented candels. Maybe a candle co will come out with a book smelling one :D

I TOTALLY AGREEEEEEEEE!!
I get this most of the time, last time was a couple of days ago. A colleague of mine raised his eyebrows when I told him my top interest is reading. He's like.. can't you find anything better to do? Like, reading is so boring I can't sit straight and hold a book in my hands.....

To which I replied with another eyebrow-raising statement that it isn't boring at all, and more words that I won't go through with here.
