Lee returned to Richmond at the end of October. He soon went to South Carolina to shore up Confederate coastal defenses, leaving behind a damaged reputation. In August, Richmond newspapers had predicted that he would drive the Yankees back to Ohio; in October they mocked him as “Granny Lee” and “Evacuating Lee.” The acerbic Richmond Examiner pronounced Lee “outwitted, outmaneuvered, and outgeneraled.”
