The du Pont plants in Delaware produced most of the country’s gunpowder; the South had manufactured almost none, and this heavy, bulky product would be difficult to smuggle through the tightening blockade. The principal ingredient of gunpowder, saltpeter (potassium nitrate, or “niter”), was also imported.
