Enter Ransom Lockwood. Formidable, forbidding, frightening, and…excuse me, but fuckable to a fault. My new bodyguard.
“Revenge’s an admission of pain. Tuck your feelings back in. Everyone can see them, and what they can see—they can exploit.”
“I’ll make your life a living hell,” she said matter-of-factly. “Kiddo.” I flashed her an impatient smile. “I was forged in hell. I’ll feel right at home. You, however, are in for a challenging few months.”
How was I supposed to stand my ground when he looked like a book boyfriend?
“Labeling something you’re afraid of as monstrous is the easy part. Understanding how they got that way is what takes true courage.”
“A feeling is an emotional state. A sensation speaks to your nervous system.”
“I think I just fell in love with you.” I stumbled back, clutching my chest, like Cupid had pierced an arrow through it. He massaged his eye sockets, looking tired, almost deflated. “Like my day wasn’t bad enough. Get dressed.” He tucked his phone into his pocket, a sullen, fallen angel. “We’re getting you diagnosed right now. Then I’m taking you to dinner. Vegetarian something. My treat.” Oh, my. I’d been dyslexic less than ten minutes and I already loved every second of it.
He looked at me with newfound respect. I could get addicted to this.
He’d recorded the speech for me.
“I don’t want to ruin you,”
“Ruin me anyway.”
Beauty is skin deep, but ugly goes clean to the bone.”
“That I can’t stop thinking about her? That I’m obsessed with her? That I want to be next to her all the time? That I know she’s too good for me, too young for me, too everything for me, and still don’t give a damn?”
I missed you so much.” The words clogged my throat. “Actually, I think I missed you even before I knew you ever existed.
“You’re playing dirty, Mr. Lockwood.” “Well, Miss Thorne, it’s the only way I know how to play.”
No better place to go down on one knee than in her own kingdom.
